Lesson 26: Sunset Brayer Technique

In this lesson, learn how to make this Sunset using ink and a brayer!

Supplies Needed:
*Brayer (can be purchased in the stamping isle of any craft store)
*Sunset colored inks -I used a yellow, pink, orange, and purple (Stampin' UP's New In Colors used here: Rich Razzleberry, Dusty Durango, Melon Mambo, and Crushed Curry)
*Whisper White cardstock cut to size (my square is approx 3.5inches square)
*Cotton balls
*Black ink
*Tree stamp (Stampin' UP's Lovely as a Tree stamp set used here)

Important!! I am using 4 colors (from the bottom) yellow, pink, orange, and purple. I will be refering to them in the guide by their order:
yellow -1st color
pink - 2nd color
orange - 3rd color
purple -4th color
I am doing the number order in case you are using different colors than I chose :O)

1. Using a clean brayer, run the left half of the brayer over the 1st color (yellow) a few times. This should be your lightest color so that you don't mix darker ink into a lighter ink pad.

2. Run the other half of the brayer into the 3rd color (orange).

3. Roll the brayer over the white cardstock. Try to roll with even pressure (as you can see, I didn't, but errors will be covered up, just wait!).

4. Using the cotton balls, sponge the 2nd color (pink) and 4th color (purple). When sponging, it helps if you rotate the cotton ball so that the sponging marks don't look identical.

5. Stamp the tree image with black ink and you are done!!

Lesson 25: Embossed Sanding Technique

In this lesson, learn how to use a sanding technique on your dry embossing.

Supplies Needed:
Embossing folder or texture plate (Stampin' UP's Manhattan Flower folder used here)
Machine to run the folder through (Big Shot used here)
Sand paper
Cardstock
Markers (Stampin' UP's Tempting Turquoise and Not Quite Navy markers used here)

1. Emboss your cardstock (I am assuming you already know how to do this, but if you need help, please send me an email scrapmastersparadise@yahoo.com and I would be glad to walk you through it)

In the photo above, I have embossed the left side of the embossed image, which is showing up a lighter color with the cardstock I am using. For true core cardstock the color won't change. For white core cardstock, the sanded part will turn white. I am using Coredinations cardstock which has a coordinating color in the core so mine looks a little lighter than the outside.
The photo above shows the fully sanded effect. You can stop here if you like the color of the core of the cardstock.
2. Use your markers and color over the sanded part of your cardstock. I alternated colors for the various petals.

And here is the finished effect. The color and sanding make the embossing look distressed and it gives dry embossing a whole new look.

I finished the card off with some Stampin' UP Taffeta Ribbon, the Oval All stamp set, Not Quite Navy ink, and the coordinating Scallop Oval Punch.

To order the Big Shot, Stampin' UP Markers, the Manhattan Flower embossing folder, or any of the other Stampin' UP Supplies used here, please email me at scrapmastersparadise@yahoo.com !

Lesson 24: Faux Tile Technique

In this lesson, learn how to make faux tile in your stamping!

Supplies needed:
Whisper White cardstock
Stamps (Stamps here are Stampin UP Blossoms Abound stamp set)
Ink (Preferably dye ink)
Stamp-a-ma-jig if using 2 step stamping
Scoring tool (I am using a Scor-pal here)

Steps:

1. Cut the Whisper White cardstock to size.

2. Score every 1/2inch along the side of the cardstock. The photo above shows the cardstock already scored along one side.
3. Turn the paper 90 degrees and score every 1/2 inch along this length of the paper.

4. Then stamp away! I used Dye ink because I found that pigment ink was a little thick and filled in the cracks a bit more.
Below is the finished card:

Lesson 23: Mosaic Background

In this guide, learn how to make a mosaic background like shown here. This technique has been adapted from an article in Scrapbooks Etc.

I don't have step by step photos, but the steps should be self explanatory (at least I hope so!)

Supplies you will need:
liquid adhesive (I used Elmers craft bond acid free)
VersaMark ink pad
Clear embossing powder
opal glitter glue (I used Stickles Star Dust)
scissors
cardstock for the base (I used Stampin' UP Old Olive)
3-4 coordinating patterned papers (I used the DCWV Spring stack)
STEPS:
1. Cut the cardstock to the size you want for your finished mosaic background. My mosaic shown here is 12X 4.5inches.

2. Cut your patterned papers in shapes, I tried to make rounded pebble shapes for the most part. I actually attached my pieces as I went along so I could cut them to size as I went. Be sure to leave space between each piece of patterned paper. When gluing the pieces down, make sure to glue all the edges down very well. Make sure to let some pieces go right to the edge of the cardstock.

3. When the patterned papers are all glued down, it is time to cover the surface with a layer of clear embossing powder to give it a glossy raised finish. Press the VersaMark pad over the top of the mosaic, making sure to coat the whole surface with VersaMark. I worked in 4inch sections at a time so that my VersaMark wouldn't dry. Cover the VersaMark with clear embossing powder and heat set the powder. Repeat this process until the whole mosaic is coated in a layer of embossing powder.

4. Once the surface is embossed, go over the showing cardstock with the glitter glue. This makes the "grout" sparkle.

5. Let dry and use on your project!!

Lesson 22: Faux Ribbon Bow

In this lesson, learn how to make a sleek and clean looking bow. This is one of my favorite bows to make because it is so easy and it lays pretty flat so it is easy to use on a card that goes in the mail.
Supplies Needed:
Stampin' Dimensional
Stapler
Ribbon (5/8inch SU Kiwi Kiss Grosgrain ribbon is used here)
An embellishment to cover the staple
SNAIL adhesive or another adhesive to attach the ribbon.

1. Cut the ribbon so it will fit on your card. I always leave about an inch of ribbon on each side so I can wrap the ribbon around the sides of the card front.

2. Cut a second piece of ribbon about 4-5 inches long. Set aside.

3. Attach the first piece of ribbon to the card as desired. In the photo above, I am using the SNAIL adhesive to attach the ribbon to the card.

4. Take the 2nd piece of ribbon and make a loop directly over the 1st piece of ribbon like shown above. Staple the loop onto the card front.

The ribbon should stay in a loop like shown above once it is stapled to the card.

5. Press the loop flat and staple in the center of the ribbon.

6. Use a Stampin Dimensional or other foam pop dot to attach an embellishment to the center of the ribbon to cover the staple.

For my finished card I used a 1inch circle punch to make my ladybug embellishment. The ladybug is from the SU Darling Dots hostess level 1 stamp set and is stamped in SU Pink Pirouette. The center flower stamp is from the SU Echoes of Kindness hostess level 2 stamp set.

Lesson 21: Use Glitter with SU Wheel Stamps.

In this lesson, learn how to use extrafine or chunky glitter and your Wheel Stamps! I really really enjoy adding glitter!

Supplies needed:
*Loose glitter
*VersaMark inked wheel cartridge (see Lesson 20 click here)
*Heat and Stick Powder
*Heating tool
*Powder tray

Steps:
1. Stamp your wheel border using a VersaMark ink cartridge.
2. Sprinkle Heat and Stick powder over the VersaMark. (To learn about Heat & Stick, read Lesson 14, click here)
3. Heat Set the powder until it looks glossy and quickly sprinkle with glitter. If making a border on a scrapbook page with your wheel stamp, sprinkle the heat and stick over the whole border in sections and tap off. Only heat about 4 inch section at a time and sprinkle with glitter. Then move on to the next 4 inch section, heat and sprinkle with glitter and continue until the whole border is covered.
4. Heat over the glitter lightly to make sure the glitter is set into the heat and stick powder.

Lesson 20: Embossing with SU Wheel Stamps

In this guide learn how to emboss with SU Wheel Stamps!

(PHOTO TO COME!)

Embossing is a great touch to any card, layout or project, but it simply cannot be done with Stampin' UP's standard style ink cartridges because those are made with Classic (dye) ink. To emboss you need pigment ink. What you need to do is make your own wheel cartridge as outlined in Lesson 19 (click here to read).

Supplies Needed:
*Uninked wheel cartridge of your desired size
*VersaMark reinker
*scrap paper
*gloves if desired
*SU Wheel Handle
*SU Wheel Guidge
*Embossing powder
*powder tray
*heating tool

Steps:
1. Ink the cartridge as outlined in Lesson 19 (click here)using the VersaMark reinker. This ink is thicker than dye ink so let the ink settle for a few minutes (I waited maybe 10 minutes and it worked just fine).
2. Load the ink cartridge and wheel into the wheel handle as outlined in Lesson 16 (click here).
3. Stamp as desired on your project. Use the wheel guide if needed (If you don't know how to use the wheel guide, view Lesson 17, click here)
4. Quickly cover the VersaMark with embossing powder and heat set with your heating tool. If making a border on a scrapbook page, sprinking the embossing powder in approximately 4 inch section of the border and tap off and move on to the next 4 inch section until the full border is covered. For heat embossing instructions, view Lesson 7, click here.

ALTERNATIVE OPTION:
Instead of using VersaMark reinker, make your cartridge with any Craft (pigment) ink reinker of your choice and heat emboss with clear embossing powder.

Tomorrow, I will show you how to add extrafine or chunky glitter to your wheel stamped border! Stay tuned!

Lesson 19: Make your own Colored Wheel Cartridges.

In this guide, learn how to make your own ink cartridges for your Stampin' UP Wheel stamps.

In the Stampin UP catalog, on the pages with the ink pad colors, the last two columns of the table contain pre-inked ink cartridges (one column is for the standard wheel size and one row is for the large wheel size). When looking at those pages, notice, there are only order numbers for a select few colors. If you want other colors, you have to make your own. Use this simple guide to give you an idea of how to make your own ink cartridges. You can make one of every SU Color you want or even make them with other brand reinkers!

On the page with the wheel accessories (Page 191 in the Spring 09 Idea Book & Catalog) you can purchase uninked wheel cartridges. The standard wheel uninked cartridge is order number 101529 and costs $5.25. The large wheel uninked cartridge is order number 103678 and costs $7.50.

Supplies needed:
*Inkinked Wheel Ink Cartridge of the desired size
*Reinker (use Classic or dye ink to make standard ink cartridges like the SU preinked ones\
*newspaper or scrappaper
*Gloves if desired

Steps:
1. Spread out your scrap paper on the surface you will be working so you don't get reinker on anything.
2. Open the ink cartridge (As shown in the photo above). Yours will be a sponge creamish color and dried.
3. Put on your gloves if you don't want to get ink on your finger (I just wash my hands afterwards and skip the gloves! LOL)
4. Apply your reinker to the cartridge, going across the surface of the sponge in rows (let the rows run across the flat part of the sponge or longways rather than across the rounded part). Be careful not to oversaturate the sponge.
5. When the surface of the sponge looks well coated with reinker, use your finger to gently turn the sponge until uninked sponge is exposed.
6. Reink as explained in step 4 and repeat turning the sponge until the whole wheel is well inked.
7. Finally, test it out!

Tomorrow, I will post a lesson on how to emboss using your wheel stamps!! Stay tuned :O)

Lesson 18: Make Your Own Colored Ribbon

In this lesson, I am going to show you one of the greatest things about the Stampin Up Markers -Coloring Ribbon to order!! I LOVE LOVE this technique because you only need one roll of ribbon to have 48 colors of ribbon (not including the neutrals markers or your home made In Color markers from lesson 13, with those you could have even more colors of ribbon!!)
For this lesson you will need Whisper White Taffeta ribbon, a Stampin' UP Marker, a ruler, and scrap paper. You can do this same technique with Whisper White Grosgrain ribbon and get the same effect.

First, cut your ribbon to your desired size. I cut mine at 8 inches because I am going to be making a little bow for my card.

Next, using your desired SU Marker color, use the brush tip to lightly brush across the ribbon. In this lesson, I am using Lavender Lace for my marker.

The photo above shows how you can easily hold the ribbon as you color it (I was taking the photos myself this time so I couldn't show you both hands together! LOL)

When you are finished coloring the entire piece of ribbon, let it dry for a couple of minutes before attaching it to your project. In the photo above, I am showing the colored ribbon against the Lavender Lace cardstock. It matches beautifully!

I made my ribbon into a bow.

Here is my finished ribbon on my card. The ribbon matches nicely with the border and the little bee's wings :O)

The border was made with the SU Eyelet Border Punch and all the stamps used are from the SU Just Buzzin By stamp set. I used the Stamp-a-ma-jig for perfect placement like shown in lesson 12.
